COMMUNITY OUTREACH MUSIC STUDENTS’ SERVICE LEAGUE, TORRANCE BRANCH (MSSL-TB)
The MSSL-TB is a service-based community outreach program organized by students of the MTAC Torrance Branch teachers. Throughout the year, several opportunities will be given to Middle School and High School participants to perform at various venues in the area such as hospitals and senior citizens’ homes. MSSL-TB members may also help the branch in the way of providing assistance at branch activities. Sharing their talents in helpful ways and lifting the spirits of their audience members are just a few benefits that MSSL-TB members will experience.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA JR. JUNIOR BACH FESTIVAL (SCJBF) This is a competition sponsored by the SCJBF for students performing the music of J. S. Bach. The aim of SCJBF is to cultivate knowledge and understanding of Bach’s music, as well as to celebrate it. Through festivals, lectures, master classes, recitals and concerts, the SCJBF offers many opportunities for musical growth to the best of Southern California’s young instrumentalists and vocalists. The Torrance Branch will offer the branch keyboard festival, where the first tier of the competition determines the students who will advance to the second tier, the regional festival. The Torrance Branch offers opportunities for the non-competitive students as well, who will receive judges’ comments. The 3rd tier is the Complete Works Festival where 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners are announced. For winds and strings, the competition begins with the regional competition (where there is no non-competitive option) at a regional site and not at the branches. Information for all instruments is found on the SCJBF website at scjbf.org.

THEMED MUSIC FESTIVAL This festival, to be held at AMUSE Music Center in Rolling Hills Estates, will have a different theme each year. The theme may be of a certain time period in musical history or it may be of a particular style of music. Students and teachers will give short lectures on specific topics based on the theme, and students of all instruments will have the opportunity to participate in a recital by performing music related to the theme. Throughout the day there will be something enjoyable for the public, such as scrumptious desserts, door prizes and theme related sales of gift items and sheet music. This event is a non-competitive and non-adjudicated program and memorization of music is not required. Students of Contributory Members are welcome to participate.
